Anemia symptoms
• Pallor or paleness – Paleness of the mucous membranes (the membranes – or skin – lining the mouth and around the eyes, for example) is a common sign of anemia in cats. However, this is not a completely reliable indicator because pale membranes can be seen for a variety of reasons.
• Weakness – Severe anemia can cause weakness, and anemic cats are frequently lethargic.
• Anemia, especially if severe, is likely to cause an increased heart rate (known as tachycardia) as well as an increased respiratory (breathing) rate (known as tachypnoea).
• Pica is a condition that frequently affects anemic cats (a craving for unusual foods). This is most commonly manifested by licking concrete, eating cat litter, or eating soil.
• Jaundice – Sometimes anemic cats become jaundiced (yellow discoloration of the mucous membranes). This is most commonly seen in cats with liver disease, but it can also be seen with a severe and sudden breakdown (hemolysis) of RBCs.
