De-Matting a cat

What You’ll Need

Begin with a calm cat. You don’t want to remove a mat in the middle of a gaming session, otherwise you’ll incur major claw damage. Before you begin, gather the following tools:

  • Blunt-end scissors
  • Fine-toothed comb
  • Spray bottle/conditioner
  • Cornstarch
  • Cat treats

Set up the matted area.

Sprinkle a little cornstarch or talcum powder on the mat and gently rub it in with your fingertips. Pull the mat away from the skin gently so you can see where the skin is.

If the cat resists, take a break and speak soothingly to it while patting it until it calms. If your cat becomes stressed throughout the operation, repeat this soothing technique.
