Blindness and Cats

Treatment

Eye infections are frequently treated with eye drops or ointment and usually respond well. When any ocular changes are noticed, seek veterinary advice as soon as possible to avoid further pain and reduce the risk of blindness.

Blindness with a sudden onset

Sudden onset blindness in cats can be a frightening and perplexing disease.

The affected cat may become extremely disoriented and may exhibit strange and unusual behavior. They may appear to wander aimlessly, colliding with objects, and become distressed. One of the difficulties is that it may not be obvious to an owner that their cat has become blind, and you may not know why they have begun to behave strangely until your cat is examined by a vet.

However, one of the signs that a cat has gone blind is that the pupils (the dark central part of the eye) become very dilated.
