Can Cats Get Sunburn?

Is it true that certain cats are more susceptible to sunburn than others?

A cat’s fur can help protect them from the sun in the same way as clothing can. Hairless cats, as well as those with thinner and/or lighter-colored coats, are more sensitive to sunburn. Such as:

  • Sphynx
  • Bambino
  • Donskoy
  • Peterbald
  • Lykoi

White and red hairless cats are more vulnerable than lavender, black, and brown hairless cats. Sun damage can still occur in darker-pigmented kinds. Thin regions of your cat’s fur, such as the bridge of their nose or their ears, as well as the skin above their eyes, are more vulnerable to sunburn in both furred and hairless cats. The sun may show their pink skin behind their thin fur if you can see it. Sunburn can be exacerbated by hair loss due to alopecia, an allergy such as flea allergy dermatitis, or even over-grooming.

Indoors, cats might be vulnerable to the sun’s harmful rays, so take appropriate precautions if your cat is particularly prone to sunburn.
