Can Cats Get Sunburn?

If you find your cat having a sunburn, move them to the shade and out of the sun as soon as possible and consult a veterinarian. Meanwhile, if your cat tolerates it, a cool compress may relieve any immediate discomfort. While aloe vera is often used to treat sunburns in humans, the plant is harmful to cats and should not be used due to cats’ proclivity to lick themselves. Ingestion of aloe vera can result in GI upset, including vomiting and diarrhea.

If you feel your pet is ill, contact your veterinarian right away. Always consult your veterinarian for health-related inquiries, as they have evaluated your pet, know the creature’s medical history, and can provide the best suggestions for your pet.

If your cat has a severe burn that isn’t healing properly, he or she may require more care, including a biopsy of the non-healing skin to rule out cancer or other more serious skin diseases. Consult a veterinarian if your cat’s sunburn is serious or isn’t improving.
