Theobromine has a hazardous dose of 200 milligrams per kilogram for cats, although theobromine levels in various chocolates vary. Milk chocolate is less dangerous to cats than baking, semi-sweet, and dark chocolate. Because white chocolate doesn’t contain cocoa solids like other forms of chocolate, theobromine and caffeine toxicity is not an issue. The chemical concentrations required to cause harmful effects on a cat are incredibly low in white chocolate.
Baking chocolate is typically available in huge bars or 4-ounce chunks, is not particularly sweet, and is mostly used as an ingredient. Only 0.2 ounces of baking chocolate need to be consumed for an 8-pound cat to be in danger. If the chocolate is semisweet or dark, cats must drink a little bit more, but it only takes 0.5 ounces for them to reach hazardous levels. A cat has to consume slightly more than 1.1 ounces of milk chocolate to reach hazardous levels since it contains far less theobromine and caffeine than the more harmful chocolate kinds.
